Neuroimmunology: Decoding the Formation and Function of Microglial States
The Neuroimmunology lab is led by Michael-John Dolan and was established in 2024 at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin. Our lab is also a member of the FutureNeuro Research Centre For Translational Brain Research and Trinity College’s Institute of Neuroscience.
We are interested in how the brain and immune system interface in brain health, disease and repair. We are particularly focused on microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells, and how these cells respond to injury or damage. We and others have found that microglia can adopt distinct, coexisting subtypes, called “states”. However, how these states are formed and their downstream functions remain unknown. To address this, we build and leverage molecular and genomic technologies to understand microglia biology using in vitro and in vivo models.
